Douglas Jung
On June 10, 1957, lawyer Douglas Jung becomes the first Chinese Canadian elected as a Member of Parliament for the riding of Vancouver Centre.
Douglas Jung served as a Special Forces commando during World War II in a unit comprised solely of Chinese Canadians. When the war ended, he studied law and was called to the Bar in 1954. While serving as an MP, Jung in 1962 implemented the so-called “Amnesty” program, which allowed thousands of Chinese – who were forced to enter Canada using false identity papers due to restrictive immigration law – to normalize their status with the immigration department.
