The case R v. Middleton is one of several reported incidents to police, related to assaults against Asian Canadian anglers throughout southern Ontario in 2007 and 2008, which led the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) to launch an official inquiry into the incidents. The Metro Toronto Chinese & Southeast Asian Legal Clinic and its community partners worked with the OHRC and York Regional Police to establish a multilingual hotline for anglers to report any incidents. MTCSALC and its partners also filed a Community Victim Impact Statement that was accepted by the court at the sentencing hearing of Middleton. On August 2, 2012, the Court of Appeal for Ontario released its decision upholding the conviction and the initial sentence of two year less a day.
